Atlassian announced Wednesday that it will use technology from startup OpenAI to add artificial intelligence capabilities to a number of the collaboration software company’s programs.
Since OpenAI’s ChatGPT bot went viral last year for its ability to deliver something human-like, several software companies have been mobilized to capitalize on interest in a category called generative AI. Responses to written commands.
OpenAI’s GPT-4 large-scale language model is trained on a wide range of text sources from the internet, and helps Atlassian’s Jira Service Management handle employee tech support inquiries in Slack. For example, when an employee enters a query to get approval to view a file, a chatbot makes it possible, freeing up service agents for more challenging requests.
Atlassian’s Confluence collaboration program lets employees click on unrecognized terms in documents to find automatically generated descriptions and links to related documents. You can also enter questions and receive automatic answers based on the information stored in the document.
Atlassian has been building its own AI models for several years and just started using OpenAI in early 2023. Combined, these models use Atlassian’s vast amount of data to produce unique results for each individual customer.
In an interview with CNBC earlier this week, Scott Farquhar, one of Atlassian’s two founders and CEO, said, “We basically have a graph of work. I think we have one thing, and it spans people doing everything from design to development to testing to deployment to project management to collaboration.”
One of Atlassian’s biggest rivals, Microsoft, is a big financial backer of OpenAI. As a result, when GPT-4 responds to user input, such as requests for information in Confluence files, the underlying computing work occurs in cloud services run by . microsoft.
However, Farquhar dismissed this concern, explaining that Atlassian does not necessarily improve OpenAI by providing a business, as OpenAI does not train models on Atlassian’s customer data.
New features are branded as Atlassian Intelligence. Customers can join a waiting list and the company will begin inviting people from there over the next few months, a spokeswoman said. display.
Atlassian employees can now use the new Atlassian Intelligence capabilities internally, and it’s becoming increasingly popular, especially among key teams, said Anu Bharadwaj, president of Atlassian. Bharadwaj appreciates his Confluence feature, which allows him to transform the style of his content as he writes, and finds it useful to simultaneously identify common threads across multiple products that Atlassian Intelligence is developing.
Atlassian hasn’t decided how much to charge Atlassian Intelligence, Bharadwaj said. Nor does she know how much Atlassian will pay her OpenAI for her GPT-4. Because it’s not clear how often Atlassian’s customers will use the new features.
Farquhar said the data companies already store in Atlassian will help highlight the company’s use of AI.
“If you join a company that has been using our Confluence or Jira product for 10 years, from the day you join, you have access to everything that has happened in the last 10 years,” he said. That data, he said, will become a knowledgeable “virtual teammate.”
March, Microsoft’s GitHub Code Storage subsidiary Said Thanks to our collaboration with OpenAI, we have started testing AI-generated messages describing changes known as pull requests. GitHub says it’s experimenting with AI to identify pull requests with missing software tests and suggest code for appropriate tests. Atlassian sells his Bitbucket software and the developer is also working on pull requests. However, Farquhar said Atlassian had no announcements for him to discuss Bitbucket.
duolingo, Morgan Stanley and Stripe are among a number of companies, along with Microsoft, that have committed to GPT-4 integration.
