Rishi Sunak is considering whether to fire his lieutenant Dominic Raab today after being handed the results of a five-month-long investigation into allegations that he bullied a public official.
The Attorney General, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, has been accused of abusing lower-level officials and making them very uncomfortable.
Although he consistently denies wrongdoing, supporters admit he has a strict management style and is intolerant of what he considers to be a poor performance in the workplace.
Sunak is expected to make a decision on Raab’s future within hours of receiving a report from trial attorney Adam Tolley KC, who was asked to investigate the allegations in November.
Mr. Torrey is understood to have interviewed more than 20 witnesses as part of an investigation aimed at establishing facts about Mr. Raab’s actions.
But the barrister was not asked to decide whether the deputy prime minister had violated the ministerial decree. Mr. Snack can defer a final decision by asking his own ethics adviser, Sir Laurie Magnus, for his swift second investigation into whether the code has been broken.
Some civil servants told the media that they would resign from the Justice Ministry in protest if Raab was not removed.
If he leaves the cabinet, Mr Sunak will have to make a minor reshuffle by appointing a new attorney general and possibly a new deputy, but there is no constitutional requirement to fill the position. .
The prime minister could combine that decision with the appointment of an acting secretary of state for science and technology to replace Michelle Donnellan, who is about to begin maternity leave.
A Sunak spokesman said: “The prime minister has received a report from independent investigator Adam Tory. He received the findings this morning. He is reviewing those findings… I will not comment further while it is taking place.”
A government source added that the report would be released, but no timetable has been set. I think the public will understand that it’s the right thing to consider,” the source said.
