Moscow’s Defense Ministry said a Russian jet accidentally bombed the Russian border city of Belgorod on Thursday night.
Surveillance footage of the explosion was uploaded to Telegram by Russian news agency RBC. Part of the street is on fire, showing bright flashes before debris is thrown into the air.
“A Su-34 aircraft of the Aerospace Forces was flying over the city of Belgorod when an abnormal drop of aviation ammunition occurred.” The ministry told state media TASS.
Two women were injured in the blast, which left a 60-foot-wide crater in the city center and damaged four apartment buildings. Vyacheslav Gladkov Governor of Belgorod, I wrote to Telegram.
One woman was taken to hospital with a head injury, while another suffered abrasions and was treated at the scene, Gladkov wrote.
Photos posted by Gladkov showed extensive damage to a nearby apartment building. Another photo showed what appeared to be a blown-out entrance.

Gladkov said the explosion also destroyed four cars.
“Emergency Situations Ministry investigative teams and employees are working on the spot,” Gladkov wrote.
He explained the need to “restore traffic on one of the city’s main arteries,” indicating that the explosion occurred in a typical high-traffic area of Belgorod.
Belgorod is about 25 miles from the Ukrainian border, and Russian fighter jets often fly over the city on combat missions. It is located about 80 km from Kharkov, Ukraine’s second largest city.
