BMW previously released a digital key For Samsung Galaxy S21 and Google Pixel 6 phones, but the feature required the driver to lift the phone up to the door handle. The hands-free option is a small upgrade, but at least it saves you the trouble of finding your phone. BMW also claims that the precision of UWB technology almost completely eliminates the risk of jamming or intercepting radio signals.
The expansion follows BMW’s announcement in December that Digital Keys can be shared between Apple and Google devices. Basically, if you let a friend borrow your car for the weekend, they can use their phone to control it.
At the moment, you need a fairly new car to take advantage of this new feature. Only his BMW cars with Digital Key Plus technology manufactured after November 2022 are compatible with Android. The company plans to eventually expand access to older models using remote software updates.
