Tinder is strengthen A photo verification system that allows members to take video selfies to better prove who they are. This feature is actually required for photo verification to get Tinder’s official blue check mark. The site also double-checks your selfie video against your profile picture. The purpose is to prevent dating scams, as videos are much harder to fake than photos.
To perform this verification, simply record a video of yourself in the app using your smartphone’s front-facing camera. Another dating site, Hinge, implemented a similar video authentication system last year to combat fraudulent accounts and catfish phishing.
Taking the video selfie step also earns you status in Tinder’s new “Photo Verified Cuties” club. This allows you to choose, via your message settings, to only see recommendations from other members whose photos have been verified. If you currently have a verification checkmark, Tinder will immediately ask you to re-verify with a video selfie “in the coming months,” the company writes.
Correct use of this feature can help many users avoid scams. And unlike the Tinder Gold subscription service, photo verification is free. However, dating sites have not yet forced members to use photo verification, so you should continue to be vigilant.
