On Wednesday, a group of YouTube Music contractors voted to form a union with the Alphabet Workers Union-Communications Workers of America (AWU-CWA). Of the 49 workers eligible to vote, 41 voted yes and the remaining 8 abstained. As of last year, the worker had already paid his AWU-CWA dues, but was seeking bargaining rights. Google has vowed to challenge the ruling, but today’s vote could have significant repercussions for the company. If the NLRB’s decision is upheld, Google will have to hold collective bargaining with a group of U.S. employees for the first time in his nearly 25-year company history. This could inspire other groups of tech giants to pursue unionization.
