This year’s Google I/O event was jam-packed with new product announcements and detailed introductions to new generative AI services. The star of the company’s new set of devices was probably his new Pixel Fold, a true competitor to Samsung’s foldable device with the Tensor G2 chip. Like the Samsung Galaxy Fold, it opens like a book to take full advantage of its 7.6-inch display, but it also comes with an external 5.8-inch display. It is available for pre-order now and will be priced at $1,799 when it starts shipping in June.
The company also announced a new mid-range phone, the $499 Pixel 7a. Additionally, the Pixel Tablet is available for pre-order at the same price. Connect your 11-inch tablet to the speaker dock and use it as a display for your smart home with Google Assistant and Chromecast. It has 12 hours of use on its own, does not come with a stylus, but supports third-party pens.
But the most important and relevant announcement at the event was the company’s PaLM 2 AI language model. This is the technology behind the company’s Bard AI chatbot and powers new features across the company’s products. Bard will soon be able to decode images in queries and respond with images in sequence. It will now be available in 180 countries with no waiting list. Gmail has the ability to compose replies to emails, and Photos has a Magic Editor that lets you move objects within photos. You can get a glimpse of all of Google’s announcements in the abridged version of his I/O keynote above.
