The Immersion Corporation has been suing companies over its rumble haptic technology since at least 2004 (check the archives), but is now looking to form a new company. Immersion owns the Steam Deck handheld, Valve Index VR platform, Steam VR software, and Half-Life: Alyx, The Verge reported.
Immersion says it is seeking an injunction against Valve from “deploying, operating, maintaining, testing, and using the accused handheld device and the accused VR equipment,” as well as damages and royalties. there is He listed seven specific patents from 2002 to 2016.
There’s a lot of precedent that Valve has to overcome if it wants to fight this. Sony and Microsoft ended up licensing Immersion’s patents after settling their lawsuits, as did Apple, Google, Motorola, and Fitbit. Nintendo and Sony use different forms of Rumble technology, but both chose to license Immersion’s patents. Valve uses the same type of rumble technology as Nintendo and Sony.
