Portugal could be the latest country to effectively ban Huawei and other Chinese companies from participating in 5G buildouts.according to reports The Portuguese government this week banned local operators from procuring 5G equipment from suppliers based outside the European Union or from countries that are not members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) or the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. (OCED).

Altis Portugal, the country’s largest wireless operator, signed a deal in 2018 to use Huawei equipment as part of its 5G deployment. If Portugal goes ahead with the ban, it would join several other European countries, including Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which recently banned it from joining the company’s 5G network.
