Canadian users are once again serving as involuntary first adopters of Netflix’s new policy. Following the decision in February to impose additional charges for account sharing between homes in the country, the streamer announced that the basic plan would no longer be an option for subscribers in Canada. If you’re already on the Basic plan, don’t worry about being kicked out of that plan, but if you choose to move to another option or close your account, you won’t be able to go back to that plan. . New users will no longer be able to select the basic option, and current subscribers on other plans will lose the opportunity to switch “in the near future.” In Canada, the basic tier is $9.99 Canadian dollars per month (CAD), while the basic with ads is $5.99, standard $16.49, and premium $20.99.
Netflix claimed it would never offer an ad-supported option, but in November 2022 it did just that, launching new tiers in Canada, the US and 10 other countries. With the decision to remove the basic option, streamers are driving more customers to an ad-filled viewing experience. The rationale is simple. Ad-supported plans can be very profitable for Netflix revenue. In the first quarter of 2023, across the United States, Netflix thought the basic ad-supported tier would bring in more revenue More per user than the standard plan. This dichotomy holds true even though the Standard plan costs $15.49 versus $6.99 for inventory.
There’s no indication that Netflix will be removing the Basic tier in the US anytime soon, but if you don’t want to pay extra or watch ads, now might be the time to opt for it. In the US, the Basic plan is $9.99 and the Premium plan is $19.99.
