Sue Gray was allowed to take up her new post as Sir Kier Starmer’s Chief of Staff in September after a Civil Service Review Board denied a request for her to take an extended gardening leave.
The Appointments Advisory Board (Acoba) said Gray could take over as Labor chief of staff as soon as he completes a six-month “waiting period” after resigning as a senior civil servant.
That means she will take over as Sir Keeah’s chief of staff ahead of the Labor Party convention in October, when the opposition is expected to announce a shocking policy for the next general election.
The Labor leader said he was “delighted” to have Mr Gray as chief of staff and that he would “lead our efforts to prepare for a mission-driven Labor government”.
“She brings unparalleled experience of how the machinery of government works and is a woman of great integrity,” said Lord Keir in a statement.
“After 13 years of Conservative government, we know we have a lot of work to do to address the cost of living crisis, grow the economy and rebuild public services.”
Last year, Mr Gray, who led the Partygate investigation, surprised ministers by announcing plans to leave the civil service to join the Labor Party.
