Until the creation of the NHS 75 years ago, care for the masses was provided primarily by voluntary organizations, charities and health systems, and millions of people had little or no access to quality health care. I didn’t.
On 5 July 1948 Anailin Bevan opened Park Hospital, now Trafford General Hospital, in Manchester.During his historic visit, the Health Secretary symbolically received keys from Lancashire County Council Commemorating the founding of the NHS. He was born in Tredegar, Wales in 1897 to a poor working class family. His father was a miner, and some say the idea for the NHS came from a collective health care system set up by miners in his hometown. Some say the truth is actually more complicated. In 1948, Bevan boasted that he had achieved his goal “by putting money in the doctor’s mouth.” His famous and oft-quoted statement meant that he allowed some British doctors and consultants to pay private money to continue seeing patients if they accepted NHS patients. .
How was the public informed about the launch of the NHS?
