Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer’s speech was interrupted by environmental protesters.
Climate activists from the Green New Deal Rising Group blamed Sturmer for taunting him at Mid-Kent University in Gillingham, Kent, and blocking his speech on education reform.
Lord Keir’s speech was interrupted by demonstrators on the stage demanding “a £28bn revival of the pledge” on green prosperity plans.
“We’ll talk later,” the opposition leader told the two, who accused him of diverting his proposal, before being escorted off the stage by security.
“Young people want action,” said one demonstrator. “We need a Green New Deal now.”
As they were escorted off the stage, the Labor leader told the audience: Many others want it. ”
According to the Green New Deal Rising newspaper, one of the protesters was student Dudonne Billa, who said in a statement: climate crisis. ”
“We will not sit idly by as the private sector continues to make billions of dollars in the face of heat shortages, nor will we stand idly by in the face of heat waves, floods and droughts.”
When demonstrators interrupted Lord Keir’s speech, he told them: “I think you’re missing my final mission on clean energy.”
Applause erupted as the Labor leader spoke to them and then as they were removed from the stage.
In the wake of the turmoil, Lord Kier denounced other protests by Just Stop Oil as “arrogant”.
He told reporters: Especially last week, when it sabotaged an iconic sporting event and caused massive disruption.
“There’s a lot of arrogance involved in thinking that only we can understand the argument and our tactics will win.”
