Ann An artificial intelligence (AI) tool has emerged to help doctors fight aggressive brain tumors. This helps identify key features that guide during surgery.

The Frozen Section Histopathology Evaluation and Review Machine (Charm) is an advanced tool that efficiently analyzes images to identify the genetic profile of glioma, a type of advanced brain tumor. Currently, this process takes days to weeks. Kun-Hsing Yu, lead author of the July 7 paper report In a medical journal, the surgeon explained that he was relying on a detailed diagnosis to proceed with the operation.

The accuracy of this tool cannot match current genetic tests, but it can rapidly predict tumor profiles. This rapid analysis saves doctors from having to schedule and perform additional surgeries, saving valuable time to proceed with proper treatment, Yu explained.

Additionally, Charm distinguishes between malignant and benign tumor cells and determines a tumor grade that indicates the level of malignancy. These are assessments that a human pathologist typically makes during surgery. But with Charm, Yu said, he may not have to wait 10 to 15 minutes or have a waiting pathologist present during surgery.

Gliomas, especially the progressive subtype known as glioblastoma, pose a significant threat and can be fatal within six months if left untreated. Sadly, only 17% of people diagnosed with glioblastoma are alive beyond her second year. according to to the American Association of Neurosurgeons.

Yu and his team used images of brain surgery samples to train a machine learning algorithm and validate its accuracy against patient diagnoses. Charm outperformed other AI systems in identifying tumor genetic profiles.

Surgeons rely heavily on the tumor’s genetic profile when making critical decisions about the extent of tissue ablation and the potential use of drug-coated wafers in the treatment of glioma tumors. Unfortunately, it takes time to obtain this information at this time.

The research conducted by Yu and his team contributes to a comprehensive effort to leverage AI to enhance cancer diagnosis and treatment.in a notable editorial published The June issue of The Lancet Oncology highlighted the ability of certain systems to accurately identify individuals at high risk for pancreatic, lung and breast cancer.
