Over $765K worth of NFTs stolen after SIM swap attack on GutterCatGang

Over $765,000 worth of non-fungible tokens were stolen as part of a SIM swap attack against the GutterCatGang NFT project.

This security breach was highlighted by several NFT community members around 8pm UTC on July 7th. GutterCatGang co-founder @GutterMitch tweeted the warning, “Our Twitter has been compromised. Please do not manipulate the links.”

In addition to GutterCatGang’s official account, co-founder @gutterric was also hacked.

Hackers used their accounts to share links to airdrops of fake “limited edition” GutterCatGang NFT sneakers, effectively depleting their hot wallets when users clicked on them.

To make the fictional link look more legitimate, the tweet included images of recent GutterCatGang branding and Phygital sneaker drops, a project in partnership with Puma and NBA/Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball. .

In response to Gutter Mitch’s thread, prominent blockchain detective ZachXBT questioned the team’s cybersecurity practices, claiming the team was hacked via a SIM swap attack.

“Because the use of SMS 2FA on social media after the recent SIM swap was grossly negligent, your team should consider a compensation plan for the victims,” said ZachXBT.

In a separate thread, ZachXBT highlighted two victims of the attack, one of whom lost a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT worth $65,913 at its current lowest price. another Lost $700,000 worth of NFTs from many good chip collections.

GutterCatGang co-founder @gutterdan_ provided an update on the matter, saying, “We are working with Twitter to regain access to the compromised Gutter-related Twitter accounts.”

“We deeply sympathize with all those affected and would like to assure you that we take this matter very seriously and are working with law enforcement to investigate the hack and security breach. I think,” he wrote.

As of this writing, it appears that the account is still compromised.

GutterCatGang will launch in mid-2021 and will consist of 3,000 unique NFT cartoon cat avatars. According to the NFT Price Floor, the current lowest price is 0.5 Ether (ETH), up almost 615% from the initial cost to the mint.
