Scientists at Purdue University have devised a white paint that could cool buildings and prevent global warming.
Mechanical engineering professor Shurin Luhan has created a white paint that reflects 98% of the sun’s rays from the earth’s surface. reports that when this paint is applied to the roof of a structure, it cools the surface by as much as 8 degrees during the day and up to 19 degrees at night. new york times.
“If you use this paint to cover about 1,000 square feet of roof area, [93 m2], which is estimated to provide up to 10 kilowatts of cooling capacity. This is more powerful than the air conditioners used in most homes,” Ruan said.
Scientists believe that such paints would be a game-changer in cooling the planet and reducing electricity use, as buildings using this kind of white paint would require less air conditioning.
And Luan doesn’t want to stop at the building. Last year he announced that he had also invented a vehicle version of this paint.

How white is the paint? Certified by Guinness World Records in 2021. the whitest paint on earth. But Luan Luan told The Times that was not the goal.
“We weren’t really trying to develop the whitest paint in the world,” said Dr. Ruan. “We wanted to help with climate change, but now the crisis is getting worse and worse. We wanted to know if we could save energy while cooling the planet.”
Unfortunately, the paint won’t be available for sale for another year or so as researchers work to improve its durability and stain resistance.
But with the planet hitting record temperatures almost every day, the need for a global paint job couldn’t be realized soon enough.
