Twitter has again made the platform a little harder to use for those who choose not to pay for their Blue subscription. The company announced The company said it will soon introduce a new rule that will limit the number of DMs unverified accounts can send per day. Twitter said in a tweet that the change is part of an effort to reduce spam in direct messages, which has seen a recent surge.
On July 14, the website added a new messaging setting that sends DMs from accounts you follow to your main inbox, and DMs from authenticated users you don’t follow to your Message Requests inbox. Twitter has announced a 70% drop in spam messages in the first week since the new settings were introduced. Before that, the website exclusive Only Blue subscribers can send DMs to people they don’t follow.
Twitter said the upcoming changes are aimed at reducing DM spam, another, less subtle, move to drive unverified subscribers to pay for Blue memberships. In fact, the announcement on this website explicitly says “subscribe now to send more messages” and includes a link to the subscription page. Twitter previously imposed a hard limit on the number of tweets users could see per day, limiting unverified accounts to 600 posts.

Elon Musk tweeted earlier this month that Twitter was suffering from persistently negative cash flow as ad revenue fell by 50%. Even if the money from subscriptions couldn’t make up for it, it’s still money in the company’s pocket.
