The Odysseus spacecraft, manufactured by Houston-based Intuitive Machines, has successfully landed on the moon. It will be the first time a privately-owned spacecraft has landed on the moon, and the first American-made spacecraft to reach the moon since the Apollo program.
Odysseus was carrying NASA equipment, which the space agency said will help prepare for future manned missions to the moon. NASA confirmed that the landing took place on February 22nd at 6:23pm ET. The lander arrived from Earth on February 15 with the help of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.
according to , there were some “technical problems with the flight” and the landing was delayed for several hours. Tim Crane, Intuitive Machines’ chief technology officer, told the paper: “Odysseus has definitely reached the moon’s surface and is operational, but it remains to be seen whether the mission will achieve its objectives. ” he said. Odysseus has only about a week to send the data back to Earth before darkness falls and the solar-powered spacecraft becomes inoperable.
Intuitive Machines wasn’t the first private company to try to land it.Made by Astro Robot An attempt to land on the Peregrine lander last month was unsuccessful. Intuitive Machines plans to launch a lunar lander this year.
