Deepfakes create a “perfect storm” for those seeking to disrupt the upcoming general election, James Cleverley has warned.
The Home Secretary said the era in which technologies generated by artificial intelligence (AI) will mislead and disrupt important democratic decisions has “already begun”.
“The era of misleading and confusing deepfakes and AI-generated content has already begun,” he said in an interview with the Times.
This comes amid reports that he plans to meet with Silicon Valley executives to urge big tech companies to do more to protect democracy.
Earlier this month, some companies signed an agreement to voluntarily adopt “reasonable precautions” to prevent AI tools from being used to interfere with democratic elections around the world.
However, the agreement did not promise to ban or remove deepfakes.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan was the victim of a fake AI recording of him allegedly making inflammatory remarks in the run-up to last year’s Armistice Day protests.
Materials shared on social media include a simulation of Khan’s voice saying he was not concerned about a “weekend of remembrance” and suggesting that the memorial service would be postponed to allow for a pro-Palestinian march. was included.
Last year, Sir Keir Starmer was also the victim of a malicious deepfake audio recording.
“Today, battles of ideas and policy increasingly take place in an ever-changing and expanding digital realm,” Cleverley told the Times.
“The environment it’s inserted into needs rules, transparency and safeguards for users,” he said.
“The questions asked about digital content and the sources of digital content are just as important as the questions asked about content and sources at the dispatch box, newsroom, or billboard ad.”
Cleverley said “malicious actors” and criminals are using generative AI to quickly create thousands of illegal images and deepfakes, which can be sent to encrypted services and social media within seconds. I said above that it could be shared with millions of people with impunity.
