Police in Gurugram, northern India, arrested a hotel restaurateur on Tuesday after a social media video showed a customer coughing up blood after eating.
According to BBC NewsPolice said the restaurant provided mouth fresheners containing dry ice after meals.
A hotel restaurant manager has been charged with causing harm by poisonous substance. The Hindu reported.
Surender Sheoran, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Manesar, said: He told ANI news agency. Five people reportedly fell ill after consuming post-meal mouth fresheners at La Foresta Cafe over the weekend.
Sheoran told ANI that after the customers took the mouth freshener, they “started vomiting and felt a burning sensation in their mouths.”
Police told BBC News that he then began bleeding from the mouth.
Prolonged exposure to or ingestion of dry ice, a solid form of carbon dioxide used as a cooling agent, can cause frostbite, respiratory problems, and damage to internal organs.
Videos circulating on Indian social media showed customers screaming in agony.
Kumar, one of the customers, said he later showed the mouth freshener to a doctor, who confirmed it was dry ice, The Hindu reported.
According to The Hindu, Mr. Kumar also accused restaurant staff of abandoning them instead of offering help.
BBC News reported that police are conducting a forensic analysis to see if the mouth freshener contains carbon dioxide.
The store said a search for the restaurant’s owner is underway.
