Google’s Waze to add In the coming weeks and months, we’ll be adding some navigation features that will improve your quality of life. New options can help you find parking (and find out how much it costs), warn you when the speed limit is about to drop, and guide you around roundabouts.
Waze has partnered with the Flash parking app and will soon provide information about nearby parking spots. View rates, wheelchair access options, valet service, and EV charging stations, whether covered or outdoor. Waze says you can also reserve a parking space through the app. The feature is expected to roll out “in the coming weeks.”
Flash apps only have an average of 1.5 out of 5 stars. app store and 2.2 out of 5 play store. (Many customers complained about its bugs and unreliable scanning at parking kiosks.) We hope that the Waze integration won’t replicate the poor quality of the new partner’s app. I want to pray.
The Waze app will also notify you when your speed limit is about to drop. When the feature rolls out this month, speed limit signs will appear on your navigation screen where roads are likely to slow down, giving you time to prepare. An alert at the bottom of the screen counts down how many feet the speed will be reduced. (The app won’t show you when the speed limit is about to go up, presumably to avoid encouraging people to speed up.)
Waze will soon provide detailed information about your favorite routes to the places you frequently travel, such as home, work, or your favorite coffee shop. Starting this month, when you start navigating, the app will compare your favorite route with the fastest route. Compare ETA quotes with real-time traffic updates to help you decide if your favorite route is too backed up to be worth it.
Passing roundabouts will also be easier. As you approach a roundabout, Waze helps you figure out where to enter, which lane to use, and where to exit. The feature is coming to Android this month, but iPhone owners will have to wait until “later this year.”
Building on the app’s community-sourced approach, another new feature warns you of upcoming dangers. These include sharp curves, speed bumps and toll booths. This “Navigate Like a Local” feature is coming to Android and iOS this month.
Finally, Waze will now notify you if an emergency vehicle is stopped in front of you. While navigating, an emergency icon appears on the virtual road ahead with a warning and countdown (measured in feet) as you approach it. Waze says this is the only new feature currently available for Android and iOS (in the US, Canada, France, Mexico, and France). This feature will soon support more countries.
