BYD has announced plans to launch a rival to Tesla’s Cybertruck later this year.
The Chinese automaker on Thursday released images of an electric pickup truck featuring bright orange and blue paint.
He said the company plans to start selling the product sometime in 2024, but did not announce a price.
BYD’s products will face competition from electric vehicles such as Tesla’s Cybertruck, which it launched last year, as well as Ford’s F-150 Lightning and Toyota Hilux.

BYD does not sell any vehicles in the United States and does not appear to have any plans to do so in the near future. In recent months, the company has opened new factories in Mexico, Hungary and other countries with the aim of expanding sales outside of China.
The company’s latest announcement comes as the company battles a sharp slowdown in electric car sales as prospective buyers around the world opt for cheaper hybrids instead.
BYD said in a stock exchange filing on Monday that it sold about 300,000 EVs in the first three months of 2024, down 43% from the previous quarter.
This means that the company has ceded its position as the world’s top EV seller to Tesla, even though the company announced disappointing delivery numbers.
The new vehicle will be BYD’s first new energy pickup truck. The company’s EVs range from the five-door Seagull hatchback, which sells for less than $10,000 and was China’s second-best-selling car last quarter, to the U9 supercar, which costs more than $200,000.
