Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reiterated that his country does not accept any plan to cede territory to Russia to end the war, rejecting an idea reportedly supported by former President Donald Trump. .
“If it’s an agreement to just give up territory and that’s the idea behind it, it’s a very primitive idea,” Zelenskiy said in an interview with Axel Springer Media. “I think it’s whether he really has a way and an approach to end the war quickly. I need a very strong argument. I don’t need fancy ideas. I need real ideas. . Because people’s lives are at risk.”
President Zelenskiy, who has long rejected land swaps to end the war, is back against it after the Washington Post reported: Trump personally favors The agreement requires Ukraine to transfer control of Crimea and the Donbas border area to Russia.
The former president has publicly boasted that his deal-making abilities could broker an end to the war within his first day in office. If President Trump supports such a plan, it would mark a major departure from President Joe Biden’s foreign policy.
In a statement to the Post, the Trump campaign cast doubt on any claims that the former president developed a way to end the war.
“All speculation about President Trump’s plans comes from anonymous, uninformed sources who have no idea what is going on or what will happen,” campaign spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said in a statement to the Post. “ “President Trump is the only one talking about stopping the killings.”
President Zelenskiy warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot be trusted in talks to end the war.
“We are dealing with President Putin. Everything that President Putin has said so far, he has acted differently,” Zelenskyy said. “That means we can’t trust him. So the idea has to be such that it leaves no room for Putin. There’s no room for him to carry out his plans. You see? He’s cornered, so to speak. “That’s so he can’t improvise. He can agree to all sorts of things. The question is whether he sticks to his agreement.”
President Trump pressured Republican lawmakers to reject a bipartisan Senate package of $95.3 billion in aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.
Zelenskiy said he remains optimistic that Congress will pass additional aid, but it remains unclear how Speaker Mike Johnson will move forward. Some Republicans, including Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, have threatened to expel Mr. Johnson if he moves to increase aid to Ukraine.
President Trump has hinted at the possibility of lending to Ukraine, but in May he refused to say during a CNN town hall whether he wanted Russia or Ukraine to win the war.
His position is at odds with figures like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who favors a more Reagan-era interventionist foreign policy. Mr. McConnell has made the fight to help Ukraine one of his last major focuses during his decades in Congress.
President Zelenskiy told Axel Springer that President Trump is interested in inviting the Ukrainian leader to visit his country. Biden took office in February 2023.
“We told Donald Trump that we want him to come to Ukraine, see everything with his own eyes and draw his own conclusions,” Zelensky said. “In any case, I am ready to meet him and discuss this issue. This issue is very important to us.”
