In an interview on the same channel Tweak music tips, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said the platform’s DJ streamers will have to share revenue with music labels. As a contributor Zack Bassey’s “X” Clancy said Twitch is working on a “structure” where DJs and platforms “have to share funding with labels.” He said he has already discussed the matter with several DJs. Of course, the DJs realized they didn’t want to share the money they made. But Clancy said Twitch will pay out a portion of what the labels are owed, and the DJs will hand over a portion of the revenue.
Clancy’s remarks were part of a response to the host’s question about the copyright status of music streamers on the platform. The CEO said Twitch is in discussions with music labels about this issue in hopes of finding a stable solution to avoid DJ streamers facing DMCA takedown requests. He also said that the website is currently doing “some pretty good things” with labels, including Twitch paying them, but that it’s not a sustainable long-term project. He also said that it is not a perfect solution. Additionally, labels are agreeing to that deal at this point because they know Twitch is working on another solution that will bring them (more) revenue.
Clancy also clarified that livestreams and video-on-demand have different rules regarding playing copyrighted music, and that the latter is definitely an issue. That’s why he suggests DJs should mute pre-recorded videos themselves, since Twitch’s system doesn’t always detect and mute copyrighted songs. The CEO said Twitch is close to signing deals with labels, but it’s unclear how the Amazon subsidiary plans to police live music streaming or whether it already has the technology to do so. .
