Every July, private jets descend on the small town of Hailey, Idaho, to attend the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference (also known as the Billionaires’ Summer Camp), the summer home of Davos.
The event has been hosted by boutique investment bank Allen & Company (whose president, Herbert Allen, is himself a billionaire) since 1983, and has hosted the likes of Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffett, Rupert Murdoch, and more. A gathering of business magnates and wealthy people.
This conference became known for deal completed In between golf, guided hikes, whitewater rafting, and tennis matches. This is where Jeff Bezos bought the Washington Post for $250 million in 2013, and where the seeds were planted for Disney’s $19 billion acquisition of ABC in 1995.
Business meetings that double as holidays are invitation-only, with attendees largely limited to the world masters and their entourage in vests and quarter-zips. Security is tight, with most movements and transactions even restricted to journalists.
However, you can remain in the conference room when a meeting is not in progress. Sun Valley Lodge, home to a year-round retreat offering a year-round ice skating rink, luxurious spa, and pool with mountain views. During the summer, the most basic rooms can cost upwards of $500 a night, and suites can cost upwards of $1,500. But we don’t have to feel so bad about billionaires. Allen & Co will cover the costs.
