President Joe Biden entered the White House in January 2021 with an approval rating of 57%. Unfortunately for him, his popularity never surpassed that level, and his approval ratings have been mostly downhill ever since.
Looking at Biden’s approval ratings as he approaches the end of his four-year term as president, it’s hard to say with certainty which events, if any, directly correlate with his decline in popularity. .
Even though significant events occurred during his presidency under his leadership, there were no significant spikes or dips associated with them, with one exception: the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
The president’s approval ratings began to plummet around June 2021, several months after the US withdrew troops from Afghanistan.
Biden was heavily criticized for the withdrawal, which was largely in accordance with the deal President Donald Trump made with the Taliban in 2020.
Biden’s approval rating fell below 50% for the first time in Gallup’s August 2021 poll, and the withdrawal ended violently the same month.
Biden’s lowest approval rating during the first half of his presidency was 38% in July 2022, about a month after gas prices soared to more than $5 a gallon.
His approval rating did not last long. A month later, in August, when he signed the Inflation Control Act into law, the increase jumped to 44%.

Trump entered the White House with an approval rating of just over 40%. For the most part, his popularity actually increased slowly during his one term in office. His election denialism and the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol appear to have affected poll respondents, with his approval rating dropping below 40% in his final month in office.
