Elon Musk has criticized Boeing on social media for hiring “too many” non-technical managers as his company, Tesla Inc., faces a wave of layoffs.

In a tweet Monday, Musk appeared to imply that Boeing’s approach to management is part of the reason Boeing has racked up more than $1 billion in cost overruns.
“Boeing has too many non-technical managers,” Musk tweeted.
Technical managers typically oversee technical projects and provide hands-on experience and subject matter expertise in hard skills such as coding and software engineering. Non-technical managers, on the other hand, tend to focus on broader aspects of the company, such as strategic planning, communication, and decision-making.
Boeing did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.
Musk has spoken out about non-technical managers in the past, writing in a May 2020 paper: Tweet He said he “strongly” believes that “all technical managers are technically good.”
“Managers in the software industry have to write good software, or they’re like cavalry captains who can’t ride horses,” the billionaire wrote.
Musk’s Monday post came just hours after Tesla issued its fourth round of layoffs on Sunday evening. The company announced last month that it would cut more than 10% of its workforce. Musk cited “duplication of roles and duties in certain areas” as the reason for his layoffs.
