Tyler Boebert, the teenage son of Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert, appears to have had trouble getting a lawyer to represent him in his criminal case.
During an appearance in Garfield County, Colorado, court on Thursday, the 18-year-old told a judge that he only sent the paperwork to register with a public defender a few days ago.
“I sent it. I haven’t gotten a message back, but it was very recent. Just a few days ago,” Tyler Boebert, wearing a dark suit and tie, told Judge John of the 9th Judicial District. Ta. Neily.
However, the boy said, “I feel like I have options because I’ve gotten very close to a resolution with my lawyer, but I’m still waiting for a 100% outcome.”
Tyler Boebert asked the judge to postpone the court date to “finish the case.”
“Okay, well, it looks like you’re making some progress. I wish you had submitted your application a little earlier,” Neily told Tyler Boebert. “But if you did that, we just wait for the public defender to make a decision.”
The judge set a new court date for June 13th.
This came after Tyler Boebert told Neilly during a previous court appearance about a month ago that he was having trouble funding a lawyer to represent him.
“We’re working on getting a lawyer, it’s a little difficult because of the cost, but we’re working on it,” the teenager said at the time.
During that court appearance, Neily told Boebert she had time to decide whether to hire a private attorney or apply for a public defender’s office.
“I always think it’s a good idea to do both, because if you qualify, you have a choice, and it’s always good to have a choice,” the judge said. “But we can settle this for a moment so you can make that decision.”
Tyler Boebert was arrested by the Rifle Police Department in February on suspicion of a series of car break-ins and property thefts in Rifle, Colorado. He faces more than a dozen charges, including several felonies for criminal possession of identification documents.

Lauren Boebert said in a statement to Business Insider at the time of her arrest that her son “must take responsibility for his poor decisions just like any other citizen.”
“I love my son Tyler. He overcame a very difficult and public challenge for a young man and became the focus of attention he didn’t want,” the Colorado congressman said. “It’s heartbreaking to see your child struggling in a situation like this, especially when they’ve been given so many opportunities to get their life back on track.”
“I will never give up on him and I will continue to be there for him. As an adult and as a father, Tyler must take responsibility for his actions and accept responsibility for his actions like any other citizen.” They must be held accountable for their wrong decisions,” he added.
