Sir Keir Starmer has promised to scrap the government’s flagship Rwanda plan “immediately” if Labor wins power.
Speaking in Dover alongside former Conservative MP Natalie Elphicke, Sir Keir said: “We are canceling the plan. We don’t think this policy will work and we think it will cost a lot of money.”
The Labor leader said crossings needed to be reduced “significantly” and “we would like to see them reduced completely”, but added he would not put “false numbers” in the plans.
He said a Labor government would expand counter-terrorism powers to target people-smuggling gangs and create a new border force to coordinate efforts to thwart border enforcement.
Home Secretary James Cleverley was quick to criticize the plan, claiming Labor would make Britain the “exile capital of the world”.
Earlier, GDP figures released this morning showed the UK is no longer in recession. The UK economy grew by 0.6% between January and March after entering recession in the second half of 2023, according to the Office for National Statistics.
