In case you had any doubts about how Jack Dorsey actually feels about Bluesky, the former Twitter CEO has revealed new details about why the board of directors deleted his account for the service he helped launch.Characteristically Dorsey, along with Founders Fund’s Mike Solana, had a number of criticisms of Bluesky.
In the interview, Dorsey claimed that Brusky was “repeating literally every mistake” he made while running Twitter. The entire conversation is long and a bit rambling, but Dorsey’s frustrations seem to boil down to his two issues.
-
He never intended for Bluesky to become an independent company with its own board of directors, stock, or other corporate vestiges (Bluesky was spun out of Twitter) ) Instead, his plan was for Twitter to be the first client to utilize the open source protocol. Created by Blue Sky.
-
The fact that Blueksy does some form of content moderation and they do it in cases like using racial slurs in usernames.
“People started to think of Bluesky as something to run away from Twitter,” Dorsey said. “This is something that’s not Twitter, and that’s why it’s great. Bluesky witnessed an exodus of people from Twitter, but it was a very common crowd. …But they… Little by little, I started asking Jay and the team for moderation tools, to kick people out, and unfortunately, the second I thought, they did it. This is literally repeating every mistake we’ve made as a company.”
Dorsey has also financially backed Nostr, another decentralized Twitter-like service popular among some crypto enthusiasts and run by anonymous founders. Admitted. “I know it’s premature, and Nostr is strange and difficult to use, but if you truly believe in censorship resistance and free speech, you should use technology that actually enables it. You have to protect your rights,” Dorsey said.
Much of it isn’t particularly surprising. Those who have followed Dorsey’s public comments over the past few years will know that he has repeatedly said that Twitter’s “original sin” is that it is a company tied to advertisers and other corporate interests. That’s why he supported the company. (Not coincidentally, Dorsey is still around Some of his personal assets are currently invested in a company known as X. ) He also makes it clear that many of his Twitter’s most significant events were done involuntarily.
Unsurprisingly, Dorsey’s comments were not well received at Blue Sky.in , Bluesky protocol engineer Paul Frazee said Twitter was supposed to be the “first client” of the AT protocol, but “Elon killed that straight dead” after taking over the company. “The length of the acquisition put the entire company on ice, and as soon as Mr. Elon took over, the contract ended,” Frazee said. “That will never happen. Also, unmoderated spaces are a stupid idea. We created a shared network for competing moderated spaces to exist. Even if someone is moderated Even if you want to create an ATProto app that doesn’t work, you probably can. Good luck to app stores, regulators, and users.”
Dorsey was careful not to criticize Musk directly, but he was less enthusiastic than when he said Musk would “spread the light of consciousness” by taking over Twitter. Dorsey noted that while Musk has previously resisted government requests to delete his account, he has chosen a “different path” and typically complies. “Elon will fight the way he fights and I appreciate that, but there’s certainly a chance he could be compromised,” Dorsey said.
