Judging by today’s I/O keynote, Google’s Gemini AI system is capable of a lot of things. This includes the option to set up virtual teammates using your own Workspace account. You can configure teammates to perform specific tasks such as monitoring and tracking projects, organizing information, providing context, identifying trends after analyzing data, and playing a role in team collaboration.
In Google Chat, teammates can join all relevant rooms and ask questions based on all conversation history, Gmail threads, and anything else they have access to. This allows her team members to know if the project has been approved or if there are potential issues based on conflicting messages.
However, it looks like Virtual Teammate was just a tech demo for now. Aparna Pappu, vice president and GM of Workspace, said that Google has “a lot of work to do to find ways to bring virtual teammate-like agent experiences to Workspace.” This includes finding ways to let third parties create their own versions.
It doesn’t seem like this virtual teammate will be available right away, but as long as you can trust yourself to do everything right the first time, it could end up being a huge time saver.
