Nvidia’s new era of computing is already well underway.
in gangbusters income During a conference call on Wednesday, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced an accelerated timeline for the introduction of the company’s newest AI chip, Blackwell, which is twice as fast and boasts five times the AI performance of the company’s current chip.
Huang announced Blackwell’s chip in March, but said this week that the company has been working on producing it for some time already.
During a question-and-answer session on the quarterly conference call, Huang said production and shipments will be blackwell It will begin in the second quarter and expand in the third quarter. Huang said the customer expects to have the data center up and running by the fourth quarter.
“Blackwell’s revenues will be higher this year,” Huang said during the call.
The company’s strong momentum does not seem to be slowing down any time soon. Nvidia stock soared to an all-time high Wednesday afternoon after the chip maker reported first-quarter revenue growth of 262% year over year.
“We are poised for the next wave of growth,” Huang said, citing Blackwell’s platform.
But even with Huang’s bullish outlook for Blackwell, excitement about the upcoming chips doesn’t seem to be killing demand for Nvidia’s current hardware.
“We expect demand for hoppers to increase throughout this quarter,” Huang said, adding that he expects demand to outstrip supply “for some time” as Nvidia transitions to Blackwell.
Blackwell’s system is designed to be “backward compatible” with Hopper, allowing for an easy transition, Huang said Wednesday.
Huang said in March that the next-generation graphics processors would cost between $30,000 and $40,000 each.
But despite Nvidia’s unparalleled success, potential challenges lie ahead, with competitors working aggressively to develop rival chips, Business Insider reported ahead of Wednesday’s call.
