Microsoft founder Bill Gates says we should stop overloading our calendars.
The billionaire shared hints at the schedule on Friday. Thread PostsHe quoted fellow billionaire Warren Buffett.
“It took me a long time to realize that you don’t need to fill every second of your schedule to be successful,” Gates writes. “(In retrospect, I probably would have learned this lesson sooner if I had spent more time peering into Warren Buffett’s deliberately empty schedule.)”
During his time at Microsoft, Gates was known for his meticulous schedule, planning his day literally down to the minute — a method that Tesla CEO Elon Musk is said to also follow.
Gates admitted last year that he used to think sleep was “lazy” and would compete with colleagues to see who could get the least amount of rest.
“I just thought that was the only way to get things done,” Gates said of his hectic schedule in a 2017 interview with Buffett.
Gates said that when he saw Buffett’s intentionally simple calendar, things changed for him.
“You control your time,” Gates said. “Filling up every minute of your schedule is not a sign of commitment.”
Buffett, the Berkshire Hathaway CEO, has long advocated for a science-backed approach to boosting productivity by cutting down on clutter.
Business Insider previously reported that people who have the freedom to focus their time on creative work rather than performance-driven chores are happier, more productive, and more engaged at work.
After seeing Buffett’s schedule, Gates relaxed his own: In 2020, BI documented a day in the life of the Microsoft billionaire, which included plenty of tennis, reading, blogging, and spending time with family.
