Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday endorsed Virginia Rep. Bob Good’s primary opponent, marking his largest attack yet on the lawmaker who ran against him in the Republican presidential primary.
“Bob Good is bad for Virginia and bad for America. He turned his back on our great movement and has continued to attack and fight me until recently, when he offered a warm and ‘loving’ endorsement – but it’s too late,” Trump wrote on his social media network, Truth Social.
Good, who leads the far-right House Freedom Caucus, was one of the few lawmakers to endorse Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who was once Trump’s favorite opponent in the primary but whose campaign struggled to live up to early expectations. Both DeSantis and Good later endorsed Trump, who is set to formally accept the Republican presidential nomination in July.
Good will face off against state Sen. John Maguire in a closely watched primary election on June 18.
“Thank you President Trump for supporting my campaign for Congress!” Maguire replied to X. “Together we will fight for our people and save America. We can do more good than good.”
Before Trump endorsed Maguire, Goode had gone to great lengths to appear close to the former president. He was one of a wave of House Republicans who traveled to New York City to denounce Trump’s Manhattan criminal trial. Goode’s campaign website touts Trump’s endorsement of her in 2022.
Trump isn’t the only top Republican Goode has betrayed. The two-term congressman backed Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz’s effort to remove then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy from power, after McCarthy’s allies teamed up with Democrats to back a retaliatory bid against the eight Republicans who forced the California congressman’s historic ouster.
Some of Goode’s Republican colleagues have also endorsed Maguire, a rare move that highlights discontent among some Republicans with Goode. Goode is also backing a primary challenger to Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales of Texas.
Trump always mentions names.
Trump has at times tried to appear charitable when speaking about DeSantis, who has reportedly been trying to help raise money for the former president’s campaign, but it’s clear that Trump is well aware of those who have betrayed his platform.
The former president previously slammed another conservative Republican who endorsed DeSantis, Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, but Trump sought a primary challenger to Roy after the deadline for filing candidacy passed.
Trump’s most successful revenge has been against the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach him for inciting the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Of those 10, only two remain in the House. Last month, Trump endorsed the primary challenger of one of those two, Rep. Dan Newhouse of Washington state.
