Amazon is permanently offering free restaurant delivery via Grubhub+ as part of its Prime membership benefits, the company announced. AnnouncedIf you’re in the US and have a $139 annual Prime subscription, you’ll get 0 fees on eligible GrubHub orders over $12, lower service fees, a 5 percent credit on pickup orders, and exclusive perks.
According to Amazon, this equates to $120 per year. The retail giant previously offered Prime members a free one-year subscription to GrubHub+, but when it auto-renewed, they had to pay $129 per year on top of their Prime subscription. Now, it appears this will be included permanently with Prime membership.
Amazon said U.S. customers can access GrubHub on Amazon.com and the Amazon Shopping app with the “same” ordering experience and pricing as they would on Grubhub.com or in the Grubhub app. To activate the offer, AmazonIn addition to free shipping, Prime members can get $5 off orders of $25 or more at GrubHub through June 2.
Restaurant delivery services are widely used but controversial. Restaurants and customers alike complain about high delivery fees, and drivers often bear a heavy workload and work low wages. Because most of the fee does not reach the driver, many customers feel they need to add a tip to the already high fee. A deal was recently signed in Europe to reclassify millions of food delivery app workers as employees.
Amazon’s Prime membership also comes with perks like Prime Video and free same-day delivery, though it recently announced that it would cost an extra $3 per month to watch Prime Video ad-free (excluding sporting events) and an extra $10 per month for unlimited grocery deliveries from Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh.
