Tesla is no stranger to recalls for safety issues, but now it’s adding a new problem to the list: the company is recalling 125,227 vehicles over a problem with the seat belt warning system. Reuters ReportsAccording to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), warning lights and chimes may not activate even if the driver is not fastening their seat belt, a failure that violates federal safety standards and could increase the risk of injury.
The affected models span the past decade, including some vehicles from 2012 to 2024 Model S, 2015 to 2024 Model X, 2017 to 2023 Model 3, and 2020 to 2023 Model Y. To fix the issue, Tesla will change the sensor from one that relies on the weight of the seat to one that relies on whether the seat is buckled in and the car is on. Over-the-air updates are expected to begin in June.
Tesla famously recalled more than 2 million vehicles in December following Autopilot safety issues and a two-year NHTSA investigation. More recalls followed earlier this year. In January, Tesla recalled 200,000 2023 Model S, X and Y vehicles after a software issue caused the backup camera to not work when the car was in reverse (not exactly when it should). The affected vehicles represented more than 10% of the company’s 2023 model year production. Tesla also recalled 3,878 Cybertrucks in April after discovering that the accelerator pads could come loose.
