President Joe Biden has alleged, without citing evidence, that foreign adversaries are interfering in the 2024 election to benefit former President Donald Trump.
“I think China has an interest, let me put it this way, in meddling,” Biden told Time magazine in response to a question about whether Beijing was meddling in the election. “Everybody, all the bad guys, are rooting for Trump. I’m not kidding. Think about it, think about it.”
It’s unclear what evidence Biden is referring to. Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines testified before Congress last month that Russia, China and Iran are all seeking to interfere in the election, a concern exacerbated by the rise of artificial intelligence.
“Specifically, Russia remains the most active foreign threat to our elections,” Haines testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee. “The Russian government’s goals in these influence operations are often to undermine confidence in American democratic institutions, exacerbate sociopolitical divisions within the United States, and undermine Western support for Ukraine.”
in A long interview In his interview with Time, Biden repeatedly highlighted the differences between his foreign policy and that of Trump, arguing, as he has done in the past, that foreign leaders have expressed concerns about what would happen if his predecessor were to return to power.
“My democracy is at stake and their democracy is at stake,” Biden told Time magazine, according to a recording of the conversation made public on Tuesday. “My democracy is at stake. So give me a name for any world leader other than Mr. Orbán and Mr. Putin who you think should be the world leader of the United States of America.”
Trump has repeatedly praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Orban, even as their authoritarian policies have raised concerns in the West.
Trump spokesman Steven Chang said Biden should “stop gaslighting the American people to distract from his own problems.”
“President Vladimir Putin knows that another Biden administration would weaken America, and so he supports the unscrupulous Joe Biden,” Chang said in a statement to Business Insider.
Putin said in February that Russia would like Biden to win the November presidential election because his leadership would be “more predictable.” The remarks were surprising given that Biden has led the response to Russia’s major aggression in Ukraine and has also undertaken the historic expansion of NATO.
“He is an experienced and predictable man, an old-fashioned politician,” Putin said.
