The Bitzee virtual pet line is expanding to include all-new characters alongside familiar faces. Spin Master, which launched Bitzee in the US last summer, is gearing up to release two new versions of the device later this year: Bitzee Disney and Bitzee Magicals. The former will feature 30 characters from the Disney/Pixar universe, including Stitch, Olaf, Nemo and Dory, Remy, Mike Wazowski and Sully, and Hei Hey.
Unlike most digital pet toys, Bitzee doesn’t have a screen. Instead, it functions more like a pettable hologram in a box, with movement-based controls and a flapping, flexible display that lets players physically interact with the character. For example, you can run your finger along the top of the display to pet the projected creature, or rock the little box from side to side to make it sleep. There’s also a small swipe bar for navigating the activity menu.
In addition to mini-games and care tasks, there are replayable animations that depict memorable movie moments for each character featured in Bitzee Disney. Finding Nemo (You’ll be greeted with a talking whale sound.) Meanwhile, Bitzee Magicals introduces all-new characters, including adorable cryptid-inspired creatures like a yeti, Nessie, and two versions of a jackalope. Bitzee Magicals also changes things up a bit, adding a magic wand feature that lets you temporarily transform your pet into a duck riding a skateboard. So cute! You can also collect potions to change your pet’s color.
Bitzee is a low-risk virtual pet game. Your pet won’t die even if you forget about it for a while or don’t take good care of it. That makes it especially suitable for kids who aren’t yet used to more demanding virtual pets like Tamagotchi, but also for adults who just want something to put on their desk and tinker with. When you close the box, your pet goes into sleep mode.
Bitzee Disney is available for pre-order for $35 Amazon Meanwhile, preorders for the Bitzee Magicals ($30) will begin on July 1. Both are scheduled to ship in the fall.
