The best laptops for gaming and schoolwork offer the best of both worlds, so you don’t have to make a tough decision and choose one over the other. Gaming laptops are now a lot more affordable than they used to be, so you can find powerful laptops with great CPUs that let you multitask with ease and GPUs that let you play the latest AAA titles without any issues. Whether you’re looking for a laptop with a larger screen size and higher refresh rate, or something more portable and lightweight, there are plenty of great laptops out there. These are our picks for the best laptops for gaming and schoolwork. However, if you’re looking for a dedicated gaming laptop rather than an all-in-one machine, check out our list of the best gaming laptops we recommend.
Are Gaming Laptops Good for School?
As we’ve already mentioned, gaming laptops are especially useful for demanding tasks. A big attraction of gaming laptops is their powerful graphics performance. And this isn’t just limited to PC gaming. Video editing and 3D rendering programs can also take advantage of the GPU to handle tedious tasks. Some productivity machines, such as Dell’s XPS 15, have decent GPUs, but gaming laptops may be a better deal. My general advice for a new flagship machine is to pay attention to the specs and get at least 16GB of RAM and the largest solid-state drive you can find (ideally 1TB or more). Both of these components are often difficult to upgrade later, so it’s worth investing in what you can up front to get the most out of your PC gaming experience in the long run. And don’t forget the basics, like a webcam, which you’ll probably need for schoolwork activities.
The big drawback when choosing a gaming laptop is portability. In most cases, we recommend 15-inch models, which offer the best balance between size and price. These laptops usually weigh around 4.5 pounds, which is significantly heavier than ultraportable laptops that weigh 3 pounds. However, gaming laptops today are much lighter than older models, so you don’t need to lug around a heavy laptop that weighs at least 10 pounds. If you’re looking for something lighter, there are plenty of 14-inch options available these days. And if you’re not interested in LED lights and other gamer-focused bells and whistles, look to more modest models with basic features like a webcam (or you’ll need to know how to turn off the lights).

of ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 It may be a little more expensive than when it was first released, but it’s still a great all-around 14-inch laptop. What’s great about the latest model is that it has an all-new unibody aluminum chassis, a vibrant 120Hz OLED display, solid performance, plenty of ports, and costs a few hundred dollars less than the comparable Razer Blade 14. It also has a built-in microSD card reader and multiple color gamut presets, so it could easily do double duty as a photo/video editing machine. And the audio is well above average, too, with punchy upward-firing stereo speakers. Battery life is solid, too, with the Zepyrus lasting just under eight hours in our wear-and-tear tests. Plus, the G14 is about half a pound lighter than competing laptops of a similar design. The main drawbacks are that the GPU is capped at an RTX 4070 (it was a 4080 in the previous model) and the RAM is soldered in. But if you want a really good all-rounder that offers big power in a portable package, this system should be at the top of your list. — Sam Rutherford, Senior Reviews Writer

Over the years, Razer has built a reputation for making gaming laptops that look just as good as a MacBook, and that still holds true today. Razor Blade 15 It’s got a sleek and sturdy metal case, a capable 15.6″ laptop screen, an understated design (unless you actually want to turn on the RGB keyboard lights), and just about all the power you’d need in a portable gaming powerhouse. If you’ve got the money to spare, you can outfit the Blade 15 with Intel’s latest 13th generation processors, NVIDIA’s powerful RTX 4070, and a 1,440p OLED display running at a 240Hz refresh rate.
The Blade 15 is a bit more expensive than the other models, but there are still a few different price ranges to choose from. The entry-level model starts at $1,999 with an RTX 3070 GPU and a 360Hz 1080p display, which is plenty of power for most games and creative apps. If you’re looking for something a little smaller, Razer’s new AMD Ryzen-powered Blade 14 is also appealing, with plenty of connectivity options and Wi-Fi 7 support. Razer recently announced a new Blade 16 and 18 modelsis a lot more expensive (and heavier!) than the Blade 15, but it might be useful if you want a bigger screen.

Alienware has established itself as a solid premium brand, but for those on a budget, Dell’s cheaper G-series laptops are worth a look, especially. G15 It continues the trend of offering extremely powerful hardware, including Intel’s latest 13th Gen CPUs and NVIDIA’s RTX 30 and 40 series GPUs, for under $1,000. Sure, the case is primarily made of plastic and the laptop screen doesn’t have all the latest fancy features, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything more powerful at this price.

ASUS’ latest model takes the gaming laptop concept to the limit Zephyrus Duo 16 It combines the latest AMD Ryzen mobile processors with NVIDIA’s excellent RTX 40 series hardware. As the name suggests, it has two screens: a beautiful 16″ main display (with optional Mini-LED backlighting) and a very wide 14″ secondary panel just below it. It also has a ton of extra connectivity options, including Wi-Fi 6E and G-Sync support, as well as HDMI 2.1 and USB 3.2 ports. This allows you to span windows across both screens, allowing for near desktop-level multitasking. Useful for, say, watching an online lecture using the 1080p FHD webcam while playing a match of Halo Infinite on the main screen. Don’t worry, here’s a secret.
