TikTok has announced that it has fixed a vulnerability that allowed cyber attacks targeting celebrity accounts. Reportedly AxiosA TikTok spokesperson added that the company is currently working to restore access to affected users.
The social media giant hasn’t said how many accounts were attacked, but we know that CNN and Paris Hilton were targeted. The hack involved sending users messages filled with malicious code. When users opened the messages, the code was activated and took over the entire account. Curiously, the affected accounts hadn’t posted anything during the time they were compromised.
It’s unclear who carried out the attack or what their ultimate goal was, other than taking over celebrities’ TikTok accounts. TikTok has also remained silent about the details of the vulnerability that made the attack possible in the first place. However, this type of hack is extremely rare, so it shouldn’t be a major concern for regular users.
This hack is known as a zero-click attack, which means that you don’t need to click anything to be infected. In this case, the user only needs to open a direct message. The technique used here is similar to a zero-click spyware attack, but the hackers have targeted prominent government officials and journalists with the aim of gathering sensitive information. The attack took over the entire account for unknown purposes.
