Apple will integrate GPT-4o, the large-scale language model that powers ChatGPT, into iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequioa in a partnership with OpenAI announced on Monday at WWDC, the company’s annual developers conference. But shortly after the keynote ended, Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, said the company might also incorporate Google’s Gemini family of large-scale language models into its operating systems.
“Ultimately, we want to let users choose the model they want, which may be Google Gemini in the future,” Federighi said in a conversation with reporters after the keynote. “There’s nothing to announce at this time.”
This news is notable because Apple mentioned plans to add AI models to its operating system during its keynote, but didn’t mention Gemini specifically. Allowing users to choose which AI models they want on their devices, rather than simply forcing them on you, would offer a level of customization to Apple devices that competitors like Google and Samsung lack.
