Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote is just around the corner. The celebrations will begin today at 1pm ET. The keynote is open to the public and can be viewed at the link below. This being WWDC, it’ll be a software-focused event, and Apple is expected to show off updates across its operating systems, including iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS, macOS, and even visionOS, the operating system behind its Vision Pro headset.
But the big news is expected in the area of AI, where Apple will have to up its game to compete with companies like Microsoft and Google. BloombergMark GarmanApple is expected to spend nearly half of the keynote touting a series of new AI initiatives, some of which are expected to come from a new partnership with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. If Gurman is right (and he’s always right), Siri will get a long-awaited AI upgrade, including the ability to issue commands within certain apps.
As for software updates, it looks like iOS 18 will finally bring RCS support to Messages. This messaging protocol will provide end-to-end encryption and improved media sharing. It will also improve text message compatibility with Android devices. Rumor has it that: Apple Music could introduce OpenAI-powered tools We might see apps that auto-generate playlists, or a voice recording option in Notes. Other apps, including Mail, Fitness, and Health, are also expected to get new features. (Again, the latest preview is below.) BloombergMark Garmanit’s chock full of details.
And, as always, there’s the tantalizing “Just one more thing to go.” Last year, the company officially announced the Vision Pro at WWDC. Apple isn’t introducing any new device categories this year, and the AVP is its first since the Apple Watch, but we should see a global launch announcement for the Vision Pro and some feature updates.
Despite the Vision Pro announcement last year, don’t expect much hardware news. We might see a new Apple TV streaming box or, with any luck, a refresh of the AirPods Max with USB-C. Apple recently released both the iPad and MacBook, so don’t expect any new tablets or laptops. However, Apple may drop the just-released M4 chip from the MacBook Pro. The Mac mini and Mac Studio are both also overdue updates. However, we might not see any of the above announced. There won’t be a new iPhone until September, and the same goes for the Apple Watch.
