Army Gen. James Rainey, commander of Army Futures Command, said it’s premature for the Army to create a new drone division, echoing the advice of other Army leaders.
“What’s more important is that we can get drones into formation and train them right now,” Rainey said. In conversation Last week I spoke with Thomas Karako, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
As it stands, the Army already has some drone experts. “I’m not sure it needs its own division,” the general said.
“Certainly, I think it’s still premature,” he added.
Members of the House Armed Services Committee last month proposed creating a drone force as part of the Army in proposed language in the 2025 Defense Authorization Act.
Representative Rob Whitman of Virginia Said In March, he said the creation of the drone division would allow “the unique capabilities of these systems to expand beyond their current role as supporters to the combat arms division.”
The Duma committee’s move comes as drones are playing a crucial role in Ukraine, Europe’s largest ground war since World War II. These systems are being used for attacks, reconnaissance and targeting on an unprecedented scale, with Ukraine’s Established We launched our drone division earlier this year.
The Army is acquiring new capabilities and technologies to counter this threat, but that’s still a work in progress, though Army leaders don’t feel they need a drone division at this time.
Undersecretary of the Army Gabe Camarillo has previously opposed proposals to create a drone force, saying drone technology is still in its infancy. Need time It will develop in cooperation with the Army.
“In my view, creating a corps or some other organizational structure to do that could, in some ways, take the focus away from some of the things we’re actually doing,” he said at the May event. “In my view, it’s important to give forces UAS capability and let them experiment with it.”
and Army Chief of Staff Randy George. Said The Senate Appropriations Committee warned that drones are “not part of our fleet, they are integrated into our fleet.” He added that “we need that flexibility.”
“I don’t think having a separate drone division would be helpful,” he said.
It’s important to ensure that unmanned aircraft have the right capabilities before embarking on a procurement, Rainey explained at a CSIS event last week.
“we [need to] “The requirements and acquisition methods for drones at each tier are appropriate,” Rainey said. “We need to buy capabilities, not things.”
