As Apple focuses on developing smartphones, other companies are moving in the opposite direction. One of them is the Light. This is in stark contrast to the app-packed gadgets we all stare at for far too long.
The Light Phone III does away with the e-paper screen in favor of a sleek black-and-white OLED. Still, it doesn’t offer access to social media, the internet, or email — it’s a phone first and foremost. It’s not completely blank, though, as the Light Phone III includes a camera and an embedded NFC chip for payments. You also get access to navigation tools, a simple music player, text messages, voice memos, a calendar, timers, and alarms.
It’s larger than the previous generation, with a cutesy form factor that’s “similar to the Rabbit R1, but full-fledged.” It doesn’t have the half-assed AI integration, though, and it does have an analog scroll wheel on the side for navigation and adjustments. It’s about the same width as a recent iPhone, but much shorter. The team says this is intentional, to make it easier to input text when holding the device vertically.
Wright also pays for private access to navigation information, so Google can’t get hold of the tracking data. The camera appears to be a simple point and shoot camera, and while it can’t compete with the latest offerings from Google or Apple, it works well enough.
Other specs include 6GB of RAM (up from 1GB in the Light Phone II), 128GB of memory, a new Qualcomm chip, a fingerprint ID in the power button, a speaker at the bottom, and a much larger battery than the previous version, which is user-replaceable.
Now, the bad news. At $800, the Light Phone III is more than twice the price of the $300 Light Phone II. That’s a lot of money for a phone. It would cost $0 to remove all the annoying apps from your current smartphone, but that’s easier said than done.
But Light is running a campaign for early adopters: The phone will be available for a limited time at $400 to help crowdfund mass production, with models expected to ship in January.
