Haringey Council has issued fines totalling £108,000 so far this year to landlords and estate agents who failed to obtain House in Multiple Occupancy (HMO) licences.
In the North London area, landlords who rent out properties to three or more tenants from one household who share toilet, bathroom and kitchen facilities with other tenants must obtain a licence.
Since 2019, an additional HMO licensing regime has been operating across Haringey.
Hubert Malcolm, Haringey Council’s deputy director for stronger and safer communities, said: “Our priority is, and will remain, safeguarding the welfare of our tenants and ensuring they have safe, well-maintained homes to live in.”
“These fines send a clear message that we will not tolerate negligence from landlords and real estate agents.
“We are committed to maintaining high standards in all our rental properties in Haringey.”
The council warned that anyone found deliberately evading licences could be subject to a civil penalty notice and fined up to £30,000.
Tenants living in unlicensed properties can also receive up to 12 months’ rent back through a rent repayment order.
