AI may soon be part of our daily lives, but in a new interview with YouTuber Kallaway, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg suggested we might have all the wrong ideas about the technology.
Zuckerberg said most big companies want to build one main AI, citing Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s Chat GPT as examples, but Meta’s strategy is not to develop one central AI, but to create multiple programs.
“Our overall view is that this isn’t just one type of thing that should exist. People want to interact with different people and businesses, and there needs to be a range of AI created to reflect people’s different interests,” he explained.

Zack explained that Meta is focused on building the foundational technology (called Llama) for businesses and creators, enabling these organizations to create their own AI that reflects the needs of their business and community.
He also noted that he is uncomfortable with the idea of working toward a near-omniscient AI, and while he has heard from other tech leaders who favor the approach, he doesn’t agree.
“I don’t think AI technology is something that should be hoarded,” he said. “I get pretty tired of people in tech talking about making one true AI. It’s like they think they’re creating a god or something, but that’s not what we’re doing. I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

Llama 3 is scheduled for release in April 2024.
