Forget your phone camera or the built-in camera on your laptop: your next webcam could be an old Game Boy camera. The team bringing this peripheral into the modern era is Epilogue, the company that makes GB Operator, which lets you play original Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and Game Boy Color cartridges on a modern PC or with a Steam Deck.
Today, Epilogue announced that it’s working on an update that will turn the Game Boy Camera into a webcam, albeit a blurry, low-fi, 16-kilopixel experience. The magic happens through the Playback emulator app, which runs GB Operator.
“Live feed from the Game Boy Camera is now a reality, but we still need to tweak it and add some configuration options,” the company said. “We were excited to finally see it working, so we wanted to share this update with you. [we] I can’t wait to see everyone having fun. This is the worst and best webcam ever.”
We’ve seen Game Boy Camera mods and other hardware tweaks before, and considering the original Game Boy is over 100 years old, it’s amazing how the hardware continues to power strange and creative experiences.
