Newly appointed Deputy First Minister Angela Rayner is Sir Keir Starmer’s first cabinet appointment since becoming Prime Minister early this morning, and has also been appointed as the new Levelling Up Minister.
Ms Rayner was promoted to shadow secretary of state for equality, housing and communities in September last year, replacing Lisa Nandy.
It comes after some Labour MPs called for Mr Rayner to be given a “proper job that he is passionate about” rather than his previous roles as Shadow Minister for Labour’s Future and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
She has overseen major departmental affairs as Michael Gove’s counterpart for the past 10 months, but will replace him following Labour’s landslide victory in the general election.
The appointment process for a full Cabinet is underway.
