Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Fourth of July was a quiet day in the news, but we still had editorials about e-ink writing, the most delayed video game ever, and even more bad news from the developers of ChatGPT.
Earlier this week, engineer and Swift developer Pedro José Pereira Vieito took a closer look at OpenAI’s Mac ChatGPT app and found that it stores user conversations locally in plaintext, without encryption. The app is only available from OpenAI’s website and not in the App Store, so it doesn’t have to comply with Apple’s sandbox requirements. OpenAI has released an update that adds encryption to locally stored chats.
Then came more bad news from the 2023 issue: Last spring, hackers gained access to OpenAI’s internal messaging system and obtained information about the company. The New York Times Leopold Aschenbrenner, technical program manager at OpenAI, reportedly expressed security concerns, arguing that the hack indicates an internal vulnerability.
Aschenbrenner now says he was fired for leaking information about OpenAI and raising security concerns. “While we share his passion for building secure AGI, we disagree with many of the points he has since made about our work,” an OpenAI representative told The Times, adding that his departure was not the result of whistleblowing.
This adds to an increasingly muddled impression of how corporate oversight and operations are conducted behind the closed doors of companies.

Unsurprisingly, the court sided with the plaintiff companies.
The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) ban on non-compete agreements was set to go into effect on September 4, but a Texas court has delayed its implementation. “Non-compete clauses keep wages low, stifle new ideas, and sap the vitality of our economy,” FTC Chair Lina M. Khan said when the rule was announced. So, surprisingly, many businesses are unhappy with the rule. Dallas tax services company Ryan LLC sued the FTC just hours after the rule was announced. But Darryl Josepher, chief counsel for the Chamber of Commerce, said the ban is an attempt by the government to micromanage companies’ decisions.
