A study by mental health support app Wysa has found that people working in the real estate industry have the highest rates of mental health issues of any industry.
Two-thirds (61%) of people working in the sector have suffered from thoughts of self-harm or suicide, highlighting how stressful the field is.
This is followed by agriculture (54%), hospitality (51%), engineering (47%), manufacturing (45%), construction (45%) and retail (45%).
Ramakant Vempati, president and co-founder of Wysa, said: “These statistics serve as a wake-up call for employers to recognise and address the mental health crisis within the workplace.”
“Even one person considering suicide or self-harm is one too many, and with the average person spending a third of their life at work, UK businesses have the opportunity to play a vital role in supporting individuals.”
“Equipping workplaces with the tools and training to identify crises and make critical interventions can prevent tragedies from occurring.”
There also seems to be a lack of consideration given to this issue.
A staggering 50% of people working in the real estate industry say they have witnessed a manager respond inappropriately to a colleague who is showing signs or symptoms of mental illness in the past year.
Younger workers showed the most pronounced rates of symptoms, with almost half (44%) of 18-24 year olds feeling emotionally distant from others at work and 39% feeling isolated or withdrawn.
